Libra is an artistic, ever-expanding enigma with a compassionate, understanding heart.

If your birthday falls between September 22nd and October 23rd, then congratulations! You’re one of the charming, balanced Libra signs.  Libra is the 7th zodiac sign on the wheel between Virgo and Scorpio, and they are often typed as more social and open than their strategic, reserved neighbors. Libra zodiac signs are knowledgable, fairminded, and group-oriented, but they can also be approval-seeking and prone to putting others’ opinions and needs above their own. Those who know or are close to a Libra realize they can be charismatic but have strong convictions underneath the surface.

Libras have a dual nature that can be misunderstood, with some seeing them as superficial and submissive, but they are actually intelligent, hospitable, and relationship-oriented, valuing character and morals over appearance.

When Libra season appears each year, we shift our focus off of ourselves and towards those around us. We may become more justice-minded, more open to what the world has to offer, and focused on ways to better our communities around us.

Libra Personality Traits/Characteristics

According to the AstroTwins, “Charm and pleasant demeanor are among the Libra traits that can make this sign so soothing to be around.”  They love engaging with others and even have a reputation for being flirtatious.

Libra falls into a category of zodiacs with a dual nature (like Gemini and Pisces), which can often cause people to underestimate or not fully understand their minds and intentions. Libras are stereotyped as submissive and superficial, yet simultaneously can be viewed as very balanced and chic in their conversations and appearance. Some of the most commonly associated Libra traits are harmonious, hospitable, intelligent, and relationship-oriented.

Libras believe in being open-minded toward others and ensuring everyone gets a respectable chance in life. People can take advantage of them at times due to their empathy, but their warmth and generosity make them a beloved person by many. They can be vain and appearance-focused at times, which can cause tension for those who believe they have no substance to them.

That said, Libra signs aren’t superficial as they are perceived. These signs love beauty and aesthetics, but they value character and morals over presentation. In fact, they enjoy being around people from all walks of life—they have a knack for making others feel comfortable and included. Like their fellow air signs, they can be bored with consistency and routine, even if they benefit from it. They will drop everything they are doing to help someone with their struggles, yet will keep any issues of their own hidden in fear of burdening others.  This can cause inner tensions, as they hope someone will go out of their way to support them in the ways they do for everyone else but refuse to voice those feelings for fear of appearing self-centered.

Here is a more detailed look at the greatest strengths and weaknesses of Libra’s:

Libra’s Greatest Strengths

  • Balanced Perspective: Their desire for fairness often gives them a solid perspective and reasoning, which can be beneficial when working out situations or making decisions. They are concerned about facts, impact, and intention rather than leading only with head or heart.
  • Hospitality: This sign knows how to work a room and make others feel right at home—it comes naturally to them. They genuinely care about how an event or situation is handled and will go out of their way to ensure it’s best for everyone involved.
  • Open-mindedness: These signs understand the importance of supporting and showing up for others, sometimes to their determinant. At their best, though, they want to give everyone a fair shake.
  • Compassion: Libras are willing to believe in the good in people and are willing to be compassionate to others’ struggles. They are understanding and can be deeply empathetic. If you want someone to stay by your side and help you see the beauty in life, you’ll want to know a Libra.

Libra Weaknesses

  • Codependency: Libra signs are known for their love of partnerships, but this can lead to codependency if they aren’t careful. This can result in Libra choosing to alter their personality and identity to stay connected to others for fear of being alone.
  • Being judgmental: While they strive for balance, Libras can occasionally veer into judgmental territory. They may react or become defensive about themselves or the people they love and can be blinded by their protective nature into judging a person before knowing the whole story.
  • Conflict-Avoidant Nature: Their peace-keeping abilities are a positive, but in order to not ruffle feathers or cause tension, they can, at times, opt to avoid conflict altogether. This can be difficult in their relationships as they won’t talk out issues, and may even resort to passive-aggression to get their point across.
  • Trouble with decision-making: Their ability to see multiple sides to a situation is an asset, but an undeveloped Libra may not be able to make an effective decision due to a fear of conflict from others. They can go back and forth in their mind wanting to make the “best” decision but become stuck in their minds when trying to make a choice.

Things That Make A Libra Happy

Libras love spending time with the person they care for. They enjoy video games, research, and joking around.

To be happy, Libras just want the freedom of choice. They love being able to do things, buy things, and obtain things without ever having to wait for them or ask for approval. They often prefer the finer things in life, meaning they are likely to spend more than the more frugal signs to attain the objects they surround themselves with. But, the objects they choose tend to be special, precious, and well curated for sharing with others or becoming conversation pieces.

Libra Aesthetic/Style

When describing the Libra aesthetic, chic may feel like an understatement. Libra signs want to radiate a put-together, cohesive appearance, and their aesthetic is a huge contributing factor. They are very intentional about their clothing choices and will opt for flattering colors, styles, and patterns. They pay attention to current trends and incorporate them into their outfits, yet also look for ways to blaze their own trail. As a cardinal sign, they love to initiate, but they prefer not to come off as overtly abrasive or controversial in their appearance. They may try to keep in line with fashion trends but aren’t the biggest fans of fast fashion, with their equitable, social consciousness playing a part in what they purchase.

Their power color is light pink, but other light pastels and shades are commonly included in their wardrobe. Libras prefer to come off as timeless and almost effortless, and they typically succeed.

Libra Career and Money

When it comes to a career path, Libras desire jobs that allow them to exert their creativity and imagination, as well as options that provide opportunities to work with/help other people. Career categories such as social sciences, hospitality roles, or artistic creators/managers are all well within Libra’s lane. They enjoy positions that let them put their social skills and imagination to good use and are usually known to be a team-player in their work environments. Libras may also strive to turn their hobbies into potential careers as to make work more enjoyable, but thai can lead to frustrations when they take things that bring them joy and apply the pressures of work life onto them.

While developed Libras can be great with conflict resolution, some may struggle with inner workplace conflict. They may try to overlook or ignore issues to keep the peace.” However, at their best, they can help settle disputes and unite others under a common cause or goal. Libras are very self-motivated and aren’t afraid to chase big dreams, but they tend to balance things out.

In terms of money, Libra may try to approach finances practically, but can struggle with overspending if they feel the purchase enhances their life. Particularly when dealing with aesthetics and artistic purchases, Libra will justify their choices, even if they know it isn’t a necessity. Libras can also struggle to discuss money with others, even their partners, due to the potential issues and social taboos that can arise from discussing those matters. However, when it comes down to it, Libras will do what they can to ensure they and their loved ones are taken care of, including financially.

Libra Relationship Compatibility

Libra may have a reputation for strongly desiring a relationship, but who is the most likely to qualify as a Libra soulmate? Regarding compatibility, Libra signs need a person who is considerate of their feelings and opinions, is willing to give their space and independence, and won’t rush them in love or life. They also have a soft spot for partners who can be passionate, romantic, and unafraid to share their feelings.

With that in mind, the signs Libra usually gravitates towards are Gemini, Aquarius, and Aries.

Aquarius and Gemini are fellow air signs with respect for autonomy and curiosity that Libra appreciates. While these signs may differ in their approach, there is a genuine understanding between these signs that often forms a strong foundation (Gemini and Libra may bond more over social connections and a desire to understand people, whereas Aquarius and Libra may bond more over social justice mindsets and thinking of the collective).

Aries is on the opposite side of the zodiac wheel from Libra. While these two couldn’t appear more different on the surface, their differences provide a striking balance—which, of course, is intriguing to Libras. Aries aren’t afraid to take on life and make decisions, which Libra appreciates. Libras are patient and sociable, something Aries admires. These two can also help balance self-care (Aries) and care for others (Libra). It’s also worth noting that Libra signs are compatible with Leo and Sagittarius, the other two Fire signs.

Libra Symbol, Animal & Birthstone

Symbol

The scales of Libra, ever in balance, reflect beauty, justice, and grace.

The symbol or glyph representing Libra is depicted as “the scales” representing balance. It appears as a “hump” with a second straight line drawn beneath it.

Animal

Unlike some other zodiac signs, there isn’t an official animal to represent Libra, as they are represented by the scales. Like other dual-symbolized signs, Libras can struggle with separating their own needs and the need of others. The scales showcase Libra’s love for harmony and fairness and even allude to their “judgy” nature. Libra is the only zodiac sign not represented by an animal or a person/creature.

Birthstone

The birthstone for Libra signs is Opal. Opal is typically associated with traits of positivity and endurance, and yes, it’s all about restoring balance to a person’s life. The stone is also linked to concepts of loyalty and hope, two qualities that define Libra well. The stone is also quite adaptable as it comes in a variety of colors and shapes, giving it a wide appeal.

Libra Element

Libras are an Air sign, along with Aquarius and Gemini. Air signs are described as communicative, socially adept, and mentally articulate. These signs are more open to a free-spirited approach and are more likely to intellectualize their feelings rather than felling them. They are far more comfortable discussing theories, ideas, and possibilities—all things abstract. They are often considered witty and charming and know how to work a room if they choose to. Air signs are the social butterflies you want in your circle to expand your mind and help you see the world differently.

Libra Modality

The modality for Libras is Cardinal, along with Aries, Capricorn, and Cancer. Cardinal signs are described as those with strong initiative and aren’t afraid to lead. They tend to naturally carry some influence on those around them, whether they desire to or not. These signs are great at unifying a group for a common cause or goal and tend to be the instigators that get things moving. They are fantastic initiators, as each of these signs are the first of each season (for Libra, the season of Fall).

Libra Planetary Ruler

Each zodiac sign is ruled by a particular planet in the solar system. In the case of Libra, the planet is Venus. Venus is the planet of love, beauty, and money and is often considered a highly artistic planet in astrology. Venus rules Libra and Taurus, though each sign manifests the planet’s traits differently. Libra is usually linked to the artistic, balanced concepts of Venus, as Libra is known to want to create harmony in their lives—both in love and in aesthetic expression. Venus is also associated with love and relationships, which are typed as Libra’s strong suit. Venus thrives in lavishing in adoring and being adored, creating art and collecting it. While Taurus may adopt these ideas in a tangible manner, Libra looks more to fostering beauty and connection in more abstract concepts.

Libra House Ruler

Libra signs are ruled by the 7th House on the astrological wheel, representing Partnerships and One-On-One Relationships. This house is often linked to romantic relationships, but it covers other close connections, including platonic and even business partners. This house governs all things relationship-oriented: different types of connections, challenges that arise, ways to strengthen those bonds, etc. The focus is placed on how relationships enrich our lives, which explains why Libra is associated with a relationship-fostering mindset.

Tarot Card

The tarot card associated with Libra signs is the “Justice” card.

This card is usually linked to themes of, understandably, justice and karma. The card depicts a man, or “judge,” in a crown and robe. In the left hand are the scales of karma, and in the right is an upright sword. The scales represent a balanced, fully-thought-out decision. The Justice card usually appears when a person needs to be accountable for their actions. The card is a perfect fit because Libra is big about justice being served.

Part of The Body

The part of the body ruled by Libra is the kidneys, lower back, skin, and buttocks. Libras are associated with beauty (being a Venus-ruled sign), and clear, vibrant skin is usually part of the reason. With kidneys functioning to help remove toxins and restore harmony to the rest of the body, it’s no surprise that Libra would strive to function similarly in their day-to-day of keeping things balanced. Libras should pay attention to any major kidney or skin issues that could flare up if they are overworked or stressed, which could signal a need to place more focus on themselves rather than everyone else.

Libra Rising/Moon Sign

Libra certainly have distinct character traits concerning their sun sign. However, some of these traits become more personalized when reflected through the rising and moon signs.

Libra Rising

The rising sign in astrology is the version of yourself that you present to the world—the side of you that others see. This is also the aspect of yourself that most closely ties into your identity and your appearance. Libra risings are often viewed as approachable and personable. Like their air sign counterparts, they can be sociable and intelligent and enjoy fostering conversation with others.  They typically prefer to be one to bring others together and will take a step back to give others an opportunity to feel included in a group setting. They tend to have a charming demeanor and know how to work a room.  If you’ve ever thought, “wow, everyone really seems to love them,” they could be a Libra Rising!

Libra Risings are most known for their symmetrical features. They can have pointed chins and are often considered quite attractive to those that know them. The sign may sometimes be perceived as flirtatious, and it is no secret that they enjoy that type of banter. They ultimately strive for others to feel comfortable in their presence and are usually adept at knowing how to do so.

Libra Moon

The moon sign in astrology is most closely associated with a person’s emotions and inner world. Libra moons are most associated with the idea of keeping the peace in emotional situations. This can give the impression that Libras hate or avoid conflict, which isn’t always the case. They are big on communication and will opt to talk things out if they are struggling with an issue. However, they will take their time revealing information if they believe it will only lead to unnecessary arguing or instigation. Libra moon signs have opinions and can make strong judgments about a situation, but they like having all the facts before making a decision. These moon signs can be quite empathetic and desire to understand others on a deeper level.  That being said, they can also be blinded by romanticism or idealism and have it cloud their judgment if they aren’t vigilant about maintaining an impartial view.

In many cases, a Libra moon may best show their emotions through quality time or words of affirmation. However, this moon sign is willing to go out of their way to do what they must to make others feel loved and valued. To Libra, people are a priority, and a balance of heart and mind is crucial to their relationships.
