The Surprising Link Between Pumpkin Carving and Strengthening Relationships
Carving pumpkins is a classic fall tradition. But did you know that a pumpkin carving date night could strengthen your relationship, too?
The reason for this is something psychologists refer to as “parallel play.” Parallel play typically is in reference to children playing independently alongside one another, but psychologists have recently seen the benefit in adult relationships as well.
In an interview with The New York Times, Dr. Amir Levine, author of the best-selling book Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find — And Keep — Love, explains that parallel play is vital for secure relationships.
“Parallel play is one of the hallmarks of secure relationships, but it has to be done right,” Dr. Levine told The New York Times. “It’s all about availability. If you know that the other person is available and that, if you need them, they will pay attention to you, then you feel secure.”
Parallel play helps strengthen relationships because it builds trust and helps destress. While there are various ways to engage in parallel play, carving pumpkins is a perfect way to celebrate the fall season, get creative, and spend time together. The important thing is to make sure you each have your own pumpkin and design to truly embrace independence while still spending time together.
