His House (2020)
Absolutely soul crushing in its power. I could not help but sob at the end. And yeah I think part of the brilliance is those flashbacks to the real life trauma. The supernatural stuff was also great and is interwoven brilliantly but God damn… God fucking damn that school room scene.

Men Behind the Sun (1988)
This is a nasty little film. No catharsis or resolution to what happened, and it’s based on real events. Be warned, this is an extreme film and it won’t be for everyone, but if you can handle the likes of Martyrs and Threads then you will be able to handle this.

Crimes of the Future is very very depressing. So much so I don’t think I will manage to finish it. Everything is so gray, muffled and lifeless

Session 9 (2001)
Starring David Caruso and a small secondary cast, if you loved The Mist you’ll love this I believe.
I can’t find it streaming for free anywhere, but I highly recommend it if you’re as in the mood for depressing horror as you say. Definitely worth the 4$ renting price.
